Most of us remember Chick as that friendly voice on the other end of the airwaves that always made us feel a part of the ham radio fraternity. That indeed was the case on my part. As a new licensee fresh on the airwaves, Chick was one of my first contacts. He made this very nervous kid fresh off the citizens’ band – with all the bad habits and other baggage – feel like I was part of the radio community. As the years went by and I got to know Chick as a regular member of many on-the-air contacts, it soon became evident to me that he was one of those rare individuals who was one of amateur radio’s best ambassadors of good will – a rare asset to the overall amateur radio community indeed!
Chick was one of the founders of this club and served as its president in 1965. A long-time participant in the Wednesday and Thursday 2-meter nets, he garnered several perfect attendance awards. And as solo net control station for many years, I could always count on Chick’s voice to be one of the first ones heard at roll call.
One of Chick’s favorite closing remarks on many of the tech nets on Thursday night was, “I sure learned a lot by just listening.” Well, Chick, you sure taught a lot of us an awful lot too! Speaking as President of NOARS and a fellow ham, we’re sure going to miss you on the air. But I will take a lot of what you did along with me – for a very long time.
